杂曲歌辞·蓟门行五首鉴赏
“蓟门逢古老”这一首诗描写了老卒的凄凉境遇，令人同情。全诗言辞沉痛、悲哀、失望而无奈，似用边塞的血泪和成。不难想象，像这样的老卒不知有多少，长年戍边的艰辛可见一斑。
“汉家能用武”这一首诗反映了戍卒食用匮乏，投降的胡人却丰衣足食的情况，批判了唐朝统治者穷兵黩武的举措。全诗表达了诗人对戍卒们不幸遭遇的深切同情，表达了对边境潜在危机的深深忧虑，言辞悲怆，感人肺腑。
在“边城十一月”这一首诗中，诗人坦言敌人的强大，颇具军事家的胸怀和才干，进而叹息，边境何日得宁，战士何日得归。在古代，中原地区统治者常以天朝上国自居，轻视周边少数民族，而诗中，诗人极有远见卓识地看到胡人的力量其实十分强大，有时甚至明显优于汉族军队。后来的元灭宋、清灭明，即印证了诗人的观点。诗人当时只是看到胡兵强于守军，因此边境堪忧，并未能见识到胡兵竟能践踏整个中原。但诗人不囿于成见，而能面对实际，正视问题，发现问题，认识问题，提出问题，从这一点上，这是诗的价值可以说远远超出其作为一篇文学作品在文艺上的价值。
“幽州多骑射”这首诗称颂了守边戍卒的骁勇善战。全诗先总写幽州民俗的风貌，崇尚勇武；随即指出，他们不但善武而且乐于效力军前，保卫乡土，建立功勋。但诗人亲眼目睹了他们狩猎时的场面，不过这场面已够让人感到欣喜了。保家卫国从来不只是军队的事情，更需要有民众的参与，才能将侵略者掀入人民战争的汪洋大海之中。诗人目睹这一群生龙活虎、武艺高强的边疆健儿，对边境油然而生了几分安全感。
“黯黯长城外”这首诗描述了边塞战事纷纭的情况。在诗中，诗人以一个旁观者的身份沉痛地诉说了一场激烈的战斗，诗中的景物描写切合战斗实际，烘托出惨烈的战斗氛围，而这种景色又是战斗中独有的，因此写景即是写战争。在字里行间读者还可以感受到诗人面对这惨剧时难以遏制的悲愤心情。
