在三月三日这一天，乘船去寻访一个家住溪边的好友,因为是在三月三日里乘舟来寻访友人，在这个日子本身，以及美好的节令里、那美丽的景色都很容易使人联想起以前的山阴兰亭之会.故人的家就住在这条溪流岸边，庄旁河岸，有一片桃林。
注释
三日：古代以农历三月上旬巳日为上巳节，魏晋以后，通常以三月三日度此节。
永和：东晋穆帝年号。王羲之《兰亭集序》记公元353年（永和三年）三月上巳日，会集名士于会稽山阴兰亭；作者恰于三日乘舟访友，故用此典。
桃花岸：暗用陶渊明《桃花源记》事，喻李九是隐士。

诗人在三月三日，一个新雨初停天清气爽的早晨去拜访友人，即兴而作此诗。

诗的题材很平常，内容也极单纯：三月三日这一天，乘船去寻访一位家住溪边的朋友李某（“九”是友人的排行）。头一句写这次行程的出发点——杨林东渡头的景物。顾名思义，可以想见这个小小的渡口生长着一片绿柳。出发时潇潇春雨已经停歇，柳林经过春雨的洗涤，益发显得青翠满眼，生意盎然。这清新明丽的景色，为这次轻松愉快的游访提供了一个适宜的环境气氛；雨后必然水涨，也为下句“荡轻舟”准备了条件。
第二句写舟行溪中的愉快感受和诗意联想。因为是三月三日乘舟寻访友人，这个日子本身，以及美好的节令、美丽的景色都很容易使诗人联想起历史上著名的山阴兰亭之会。诗人特意标举“永和三日”，读者即可以从这里引发出丰富的联想，在脑海中描绘出一幅“天朗气清，惠风和畅”，“茂林修竹，清流激湍”的清丽画图，和“群贤毕至，少长咸集”、“游目骋怀，极视听之娱”的欢乐场面。
三四两句转写此行的目的地——李九庄的环境景色。故人的家就住在这条溪流岸边，庄旁河岸，有一片桃林。三月初头，正是桃花盛开的季节，让人自然联想起夹岸桃花的武陵源。实际上，作者在这里正是暗用桃花源的典故，把李九庄比作现实的桃源仙境，不过用得非常自然巧妙，令人浑然不觉罢了。张旭《桃花矶》说：“桃花尽日随流水，洞在清溪何处边？”同样暗用桃源之典。但张诗以问语作收，得摇曳不尽之致；常诗以直叙作结，见兴会淋漓之情。机杼虽同，而意趣自异。
以上所说的，是把三四两句理解为诗人到达李九庄后即目所见的情景。这境界、情调已经够优美了。但细味题目中的“寻”字，却感到诗人在构思上还打了一个小小的埋伏。三四两句，实际上并非到达后即目所见，而是舟行途中对目的地的遥想，是根据故人对他的居处所作的诗意介绍而生出的想象。诗人并没有到过李九庄，只是听朋友说过：从杨林渡头出发，有一条清溪直通他家门前，不须费力寻找，只要看到一片繁花似锦的桃林，就是他家的标志了。这正是“故人家在桃花岸，直到门前溪水流”这种诗意遥想的由来。不妨说，这首诗的诗意就集中体现在由友人的提示而去寻访所生出的美丽遐想上。这种遐想，使得这首本来容易写得比较平直的诗增添了曲折的情致和隽永的情味，变得更耐人涵咏咀嚼了。
