译文
天空广阔无边鸟儿消失天际，古时的遗迹消失在这荒废的乐游原里。
想要报效祖国建功立业，那五陵的数目都在那萧瑟而秋风中。
注释
乐游原：古地名，遗址在今陕西省西安市内大雁塔东北，是当时有名的游览胜地。
澹澹：广阔无边的样子。
没：消失。
销沉：形迹消失、沉没。销：同“消”，消散，消失。
此中：指乐游原四周。
事业：功业。
五陵：汉代五个皇帝的陵墓，分别为汉高祖刘邦的长陵，汉惠帝刘盈的安陵，汉景帝刘启的阳陵，汉武帝刘彻的茂陵，汉昭帝刘弗陵的平陵。约位于现在的西安市西北。
无树：即每棵树。

登乐游原创作背景
国家正值战乱之际，诗人因奸人诬陷被贬，内心惆怅，来到乐游原，看到眼前这曾经繁华的园林已经衰败不堪，内心感慨，作此诗抒怀。

登乐游原鉴赏
“长空澹澹孤鸟没，万古销沉向此中。”上联描写了乐游原的景色，渲染了凄凉的气氛。登临乐游原，只见孤鸟远飞；沧海桑田，人事变迁，惟有长空永在。寓情于景，情景交融，体现了诗人对物是人非，夕盛今衰的感慨之情，对执政者的劝勉忠告。诗人在此展示了永恒的宇宙对有限的人事的销蚀，深感人世盛衰、兴亡迭代、终在无限的宇宙中归于寂灭，可见诗人感慨之深。
“看取汉家何事业，五陵无树起秋风。”下联萧瑟凄凉，衰败的景色使诗人对历史的风云变幻，人世沧桑发出由衷的感慨。诗人从纵横两方面，即地理和历史的角度，分别进行观览与思考，从而表达出登楼临眺时触动的个人感受。用典的修辞手法，凝练含蓄，反用汉武帝《秋风辞》“秋风起兮白云飞飞意”，言汉朝之英雄伟业皆已成历史陈迹，诗人内心对报效祖国，建功立业，驱除侵略者抱有崇高的爱国热情，感喟之情极深。

杜牧（公元803－约852年），字牧之，号樊川居士，汉族，京兆万年（今陕西西安）人，唐代诗人。杜牧人称“小杜”，以别于杜甫。与李商隐并称“小李杜”。因晚年居长安南樊川别墅，故后世称“杜樊川”，著有《樊川文集》。
