昔年因读李白杜甫诗，长恨二人不相从。

译文
当年因为读了李白杜甫的诗，常常遗憾他们不常在一起。
我与孟郊是同一时代的人，为什么也像他们一样别多聚少呢？
孟郊正等待朝廷任命新职，年老的时候号称行动笨拙。
我稍微狡猾了些，惭愧地像小草依附长松一样依附着孟郊的才华。
低下头拜见孟郊，与他相互依存。
孟郊却不回头，就像用小树枝去撞钟一样。
我愿意变身成为云，孟郊变成龙。
四方上下追逐着孟郊，即使有离别也常常相逢。
注释
东野：即孟郊（751-814），字东野，湖州武康（今浙江德清）人，唐代诗人，韩愈的好友。
不相从：不常在一起。
并世：同一时代。并，同。
如何复蹑二子踪：为什么又像他们那样（别多聚少）呢？复，又。蹑，踩、追随。二子，指李白和杜甫。
不得官：写诗时孟郊正等待朝廷任命新职。
夸：号称。
龙种：年老行动笨拙之态。
韩子：韩愈自指。
奸黠（xiá）：狡猾。
青蒿：小草，韩愈自比。
长松：比喻孟郊有乔木之才。
駏蛩：古代传说中的一种动物，常背负另一种叫“蟨”的动物行走，蟨则为它取甘草吃，它们互相帮助为生。
寸筳：小竹枝，这里也是韩愈自比。
巨钟：比喻孟郊。
虽有离别何由逢：即使人世间有离别这回事也碰不上了。逢，遇。

醉留东野创作背景
此诗约作于贞元十四年（798年），当时韩愈在汴州(治所在今河南省开封市)刺史董晋幕中做观察推官。孟郊原来客游在汴，孟郊将要离开汴州南行，韩愈赋此诗留别。

醉留东野鉴赏
前四句自比李杜。韩少孟十七岁。孟诗多寒苦遭遇，用字造句力避平庸浅俗，追求瘦硬。与贾岛齐名，故有“郊寒岛瘦”之称。韩诗较孟粗放，所以以韩比李，以孟比杜。这里虽未出现“留”字，但紧紧扣住了诗题《醉留东野》中的“留”字，深厚友情自然流露，感人至深。
五至八句对二人的处境现状和性格作了比较。“东野不得官，白首夸龙钟”。诗人在过去的诗中曾以“雄骜”二字评东野，即说他孤忠耿介，傲骨铮铮。“白首夸龙钟”，一“夸”字即写“雄骜”。紧接着韩愈写自己，韩承认自己有点“滑头”，比起孟来有时不那么老实，所以能周旋于官场。在东野这株郁郁高松面前，自惭有如青蒿。意思是说，我今在幕中任职，不过依仗一点小聪明，比起孟郊的才能，实在是自愧弗如。
最后一段，祝愿二人友谊长存。我十分崇拜孟郊，我愿做驱蛩，负孟避祸。孟郊这样做下去，我和孟郊的才能相差悬殊，犹如“寸莛撞钜钟”。我愿变为云，孟郊变为龙，世间虽然有离别的事，但我们二人如云龙相随，永不分离。
本诗以“醉”言出之，肆口道来，设想奇僻，幽默风趣；开篇即表示对李、杜的向往，既表达了与友人惜别之情，又可看出诗人在诗歌艺术上的追求与自信。
全诗通俗易懂，朗朗上口。多次用典丰富而含蓄地表达对孟郊的推崇，如《易经·乾卦·文言》说：“同声相应，同气相求，云从龙。风从虎。”希望自己和孟郊变为云和龙。同时作者借“醉酒”用“夸龙钟”与“稍奸黠”形容孟郊与自己，足见两人感情深厚。

韩愈（768～824）字退之，唐代文学家、哲学家、思想家，河阳（今河南省焦作孟州市）人，汉族。祖籍河北昌黎，世称韩昌黎。晚年任吏部侍郎，又称韩吏部。谥号“文”，又称韩文公。他与柳宗元同为唐代古文运动的倡导者，主张学习先秦两汉的散文语言，破骈为散，扩大文言文的表达功能。宋代苏轼称他“文起八代之衰”，明人推他为唐宋八大家之首，与柳宗元并称“韩柳”，有“文章巨公”和“百代文宗”之名，作品都收在《昌黎先生集》里。韩愈在思想上是中国“道统”观念的确立者，是尊儒反佛的里程碑式人物。
