昔有愚人，至于他家。主人与食，嫌淡无味。主人闻已，更为益盐。既得盐美，便自念言：“所以美者，缘有盐故。少有尚尔，况复多也？”愚人无智，便空食盐。食已口爽，反为其患。
愚人食盐译文及注释
译文
从前有个愚蠢的人，到朋友家，主人给他食物。食物嫌淡而无味。主人知道之后，于是添加盐。吃的，很美，于是自言自语说：“之所以味道鲜美，是有了盐的缘故。很少就如此，何况又多了？”这个愚蠢的人没有智慧，就只吃盐。味觉败坏，反而成为他的祸患。天下的事情都是这样，经过则不但没有好处，反而是有害的。

更：再次。
益：增加。
既：已经。
空：空口。
口爽：口味败坏。
所以：……的原因。
复：再。
爽：差、败坏。
智：智慧。
故：缘故。
反：反而。
患：祸患。
愚人食盐鉴赏
从前有一个愚笨的人，有一天到一个很远的朋友家里去。主人便很殷勤地招待。并煮了好几道好菜招待这位客人，可是忘了放盐，所以每道菜都淡而无味。这位客人对主人说：“你今天烧的菜都很名贵，可是淡了一点，所以不太好吃。”主人说：“啊！我忘了放一样东西！”于是到厨房拿了些盐，放进每一道菜，搅拌了一会儿再请客人尝尝，这回每道菜都很美味可口。问主人说：“你放了些什么，菜就那么好吃？”
主人说：“放盐呀！之所以每样菜都好吃，是因为有盐，盐是百味之源。”傻人以为盐既然那么好吃，回去每餐都买盐来吃好了，省得煮那么多菜。于是到了街上买了一大包的盐，回到家里急忙打开，抓了一把放进嘴里，苦涩不堪，以为是被那位亲戚骗了。
各位大众，世间各人有各人的智识，知识也有高高低低的差别。知识是改造自己和利益他人的武器。若是智识用之不当！也可能毁灭自己、和违害社会。更是要用得不偏不倚，才能发挥效用。
比喻贪吃好玩，与断食偏食都不适中。过分的享乐与吃苦主义都有偏。世间万事必须适中，过与不及都可能坏事。又比喻有些人做事不负责任，可能一生一世都一事无成，过分的热衷名利，也会造成争夺计较而造恶业，或劳碌一生，与烦恼纠缠不休，乃至生生世世都轮回不息。
世间万事做得适中，即成功立业。物用之得适即物物皆良，人用之得适即人尽其才。时、地、人、都恰到好处，即事事皆通，否则事事都障碍。世间事事物物皆须靠我
禅宗的祖师，往往一言半句即开启人的智慧—开悟。有人一生埋在禅堂里，埋在经典里参研，都不能开悟何故？机缘也、善根也、智慧也、对机对法，遇缘即应。否则多费工夫也没有受用，所以佛法一点点都很能受用，无善根无缘分的人再多亦没有用。
有些不法的人说：‘德行一斤值多少钱？’他们视道德良善一文不值！可是对于修行的人来说，德行乃是无上的至宝。一样一种东西，有的人如宝贝一样，有的人视如粪土，这就得看人的用途了。就好像有某些信仰佛教的人说：我没有空念佛，也没有空用功修行，待儿女长大以后，才来好好用功。
我们一天二十四小时，真的一点空都没有吗？我想不是的，都是名和利填藏满了脑子里，那里有空呢？有信心的人把佛法当做至宝，没有信心的人把佛法当做闲时的消遣品！能不能受用佛法就是在这里。能受用的人，就是一点一滴也当作宝贝，而受持奉行。不能受用的人，就是听多了，返而变成‘。本则故事意义就在这里。
