[公元一0三二年至一一0二年]字邦直，魏人。生于宋仁宗明道元年，卒于徽宗崇宁元年，年七十一岁。七岁知读书，日诵数千言。稍能为文，因佛寺火，作浮图火解，兄警奇之。韩琦闻其名，妻以侄女。举进士，调邢州司户参军。应材识兼茂科，欧阳修壮其文，以比苏轼。治平二年，（公元一0六五年）试阁策入等，授书郎签书。神宗召为两朝史编修官，起居注，进知制诰。哲宗朝，范纯仁去位，独专中书，复青苗、免役诸法。计激帝怒，罢苏辙官。徽宗立，为门下侍郎。寻为曾布所陷出知大名府，卒。清臣以俭自持至富贵不改。居官奉法，毋敢挠以私。清臣所为文，简重宏放，自成一家。
