春秋时期，孔子的弟子宰予很会说漂亮话，起初孔子很喜欢他，以为他一定会有出息。可是不久孔子就发现他经常不来上课，派人去找，发现他躲在房间睡大觉，孔子知道后很伤感地说：“腐烂的木头不能雕刻，粪土一样的墙壁不能粉刷。”
