公元前208年，项羽率40万大军开往咸阳，被刘邦的守军挡住。项伯请刘邦到鸿门赴宴。刘邦到鸿门后，项羽设计让项庄舞剑助兴，意在乘机杀了刘邦。项伯也舞剑助兴，百般保护刘邦，刘邦手下樊哙冲进营帐来保护刘邦，刘邦借机逃离。
