贾府被抄家后，贾赦、贾珍被流放，原来与贾府走得近的人纷纷回避。皇上念贾妃的旧情，封贾政世袭旧职，有些人又回到贾政的身边。但此时的贾府家计萧条，入不敷出，一天不如一天。薛府也被薛蟠弄得接近家破人亡。
