班门弄斧的典故

鲁班是战国时代的鲁国人。他是一个善于制作精巧器具的能手，人们叫他“巧人”，民间历来把他奉为木匠的始祖。谁敢在鲁班门前卖弄使用斧子的技术，也就是说，想在大行家面前显示自己的本领，这种太不谦虚的可笑行为，就叫做“鲁班门前弄大斧”，简称“班门弄斧”。这和俗语所说的“关公面前耍大刀”的意思差不多。

其实，“班门弄斧”这句成语早在唐朝就有它的雏形了。文学家柳宗元在一篇序文中就有这样一句：“操斧于班郢之门，斯颜耳！”意思是说，在鲁班和郢人（也是一个操斧能手）的门前表现用斧子的本事，脸皮也太厚了。

这句成语有时也用作自谦之词，表示自己不敢在行家面前卖弄自己的小本领。
