战国时期，孟子就夏桀和殷纣的灭亡有如下看法：桀与纣失天下就是因为他们丧失了百姓的拥护，如果有君主推行仁政就能统一天下，现今有人想一统天下就像得了7年的病去求蓄积3年以上的艾草灸治一样，不立志施行仁政，那么一辈子也不能统一。
